Center of the Russian Geographical Society Opens in New Delhi
The Center of the Russian Geographical Society has started its work in the Indian capital New Delhi. Its opening ceremony took place within the framework of the forum "Under One Sun: Russia – India. Business and Culture". The center will help create new opportunities for Indians who love Russia and geography and want to implement their ideas with the organizational and academic support of the RGS, said Ilya Gurov, First Deputy Executive Director of the Russian Geographical Society.
“After all, what is the RGS? It is the Ministry of Good Deeds," Ilya Gurov stressed.
According to him, Indians have already planned many interesting projects. They are going to republish translations of Russian books, make films, and restore historical routes from Russia to India. One of the first projects of the Center of the Russian Geographical Society in New Delhi is to publish the works of Russian travelers, that have never been published in the country before.
“This is Andrey Snesarev (1865-1937), Innokenty Sibiryakov (1860-1901), someone else from our collections. Perhaps these will be albums of works dedicated to India by famous Russian artists, illustrations from books that described the travels of grand dukes and emperors to India," Gurov added.
According to Sudhir Sabharwal, head of the Center of the Russian Geographical Society in New Delhi, the main task is to promote the development of relations between Russia and India not only in business but also in science and culture.
“Our goals are education, the fight against climate change, connection with nature, scientific exchanges. We hope that this organization will make our relations even stronger," he said.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov stressed that the establishment of the RGS Center would contribute to the development of humanitarian ties and the promotion of a special and privileged strategic partnership between the two countries.
"This RGS Center will increase opportunities for scientific and cultural cooperation, expand ties between people and play an important role in raising awareness of the potential of today's Russia and India as two centers of power," Denis Alipov said.
